Thanks to the proliferation of do-it-yourself crafters, there are a lot of bulletin board alternatives today that are visually appealing. The custom-made rattan board in the picture supports clips or pegs that can be permanently attached and won’t fall to the floor.
I added this rattan board to the wall next to my front door when I adopted my puppy so that I would have a place to pin notes.
When to choose a peg board or chalkboard
If you have pets or small children, something a little safer is your best choice. The great thing about pegs and clips is that they’re a lot larger than a thumbtack or pin. Chalk is also non-toxic and available in fun colours.
When to choose a pin board or corkboard
Pin boards and corkboards can be a beautiful option for older members of your household, who need an outlet for their creativity. They’re a great way to give you the freedom to add things to your wall on a whim, while knowing you can make changes to your wall decor whenever you want to.
How to customize a bulletin board
The first option is to do it yourself with a quick trip to your local craft store. All you’ll need is a wooden frame and a material (rattan, wood, etc.) to fill the frame. For a chalkboard, you’ll also need to pick up some chalkboard paint.
The second option is to find a crafter who will make a custom board for you. A lot of mom-and-pop shops will let you choose a custom size and will even add your family name or a custom message to the frame.
