Fifteen years ago, the Millennial generation was responsible for an explosion of “affordable luxury” and “aspirational” brands. We all graduated into the Financial Crisis, and, lacking the financial means of our parents, Millennials created DTC brands to produce quality at a lower price on every product and service, from clothing to hair styling.
With COVID, “affordable luxury” became a thing of the past and low-key luxury made its entrance. “Authentic” has replaced “aspirational” and there’s nothing chic-er than being financially responsible. A #LKRB interior is an authentic mix of one-of-kind luxuries and contemporary decor, bringing an old money aesthetic to contemporary living.
What’s hot
- Mixing inherited antiques with contemporary designs
- DIY furniture mods on lower priced furniture
- Being authentically modern instead of copying #oldmoney
- Bringing a little country feel into your urban or suburban home
What’s not
- Filling your home with your parents’ (or grandparents’) furniture
- Buying high-end chairs and sofas that are uncomfortable to sit on
- Giclée prints of other people’s horses and dogs
- Choosing decor that isn’t friendly for children and puppies
I’ve personally never spent more on a piece of furniture than I would on a pair of shoes. Not to say that I never would if I were older. But, this blog is about the tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years that allowed me to create welcoming interiors as a young adult with a little handiwork instead of a lot of money.
