You don’t need to be a Martha Stewart to decorate your home with gorgeous, handmade stockings. Bucilla stockings are a beautiful do-it-yourself option that anyone can assemble. And, if you don’t want to DIY, there are a lot of mom-and-pop shops that will make custom stockings for you.
When I was little, my mom hand knit each of us our own Christmas stocking with a custom pattern. Mine was fuschia and grey. I can’t knit or sew like that, so when I wanted to make my own stockings, I bought Bucilla kits instead.
How to make Bucilla stockings
A Bucilla stocking kit costs about $30, features colourful felt and sequin designs, and takes about 70 to 100 hours to assemble. The tops of the stockings are easily personalized with your loved ones’ names.
Even someone with no sewing skills can assemble the kits with enough care. You start by cutting out the pattern pieces, each identified with a number. Once cut out, each piece is embellished with sequins. Then, you attach the pattern pieces in numerical order, adding a little stuffing as indicated in the directions.
How to find custom stockings
If you don’t want to make anything yourself, there are a lot of options. You can even find crafters who will assemble a Bucilla stocking for you.
Before shopping, it helps to decide on a few details that are important to you. Do you want a traditional knit stocking? Or, do you prefer felt or velvet? Is a faux fur lining a have-to-have? Do you want a lot of colour? Or, do you prefer a simple red-and-white aesthetic? Once you’ve chosen those details, you should easily find a crafter that specializes in the kind of stocking that you want.
The stockings in the picture were both made from Bucilla kits. The sparkly, intricate designs and custom embroidered details add a luxurious touch to my seasonal decor.
