Decorating 101: attractive and colourful linens

When introducing colour into your home, purchasing colourful linens is a great way to test how different colours attract positive energy to your environment. Colourful curtains, pillows, throws, towels and bedding can all enhance the ambience of a room without the permanence of investing in colourful paint or furniture. Linens typically last for about 5 years before they need to be repaired or replaced.

Why many luxury interiors have white linens

The reason a lot of luxury home owners start with white linens is because they evoke the serenity of a 5-star hotel or premier spa. When you think of “luxury linens”, you probably think of white Turkish or Egyptian cotton and high thread-count sheets.

If your home has a sauna or a guest bedroom, then white linens may be the perfect choice for those spaces. I also have white pool pillows that I take to the cabana with me during the summer.

However, white linens may not be the best choice for the rest of your home. After a few months, the feeling of living in a hotel rather than a home can weigh on your mood. And, when it comes to budgeting, white linens don’t last very long because they require laborious washing to maintain.

How to use colour schemes to shop for linens

Depending on the size of your family, you may need a lot of colours to outfit a home. Some families like to have a different colour towel for each member of the household. Or, a different colour for each bedroom. It’s easier to shop for decor to match a broad colour scheme than to try to pick specific colours.

The simplest colour scheme is to choose one colour and to purchase a lot of items in variations of that colour. For example, if you want to have shades of blue in your living room, you could buy a mix of sky blue, navy, and cerulean pillows and throws.

An alternative colour scheme is to choose a tone (pastels, neons, brights, jewels, darks, metallics, etc.) and to purchase a lot of colours with similar tones. For example, if you want to decorate a nursery with pastels, you could buy aqua, lavendar, and peach curtains and bedding.

The washroom towels in the photo reflect the summer colours of coastal living, complementing the sun-drenched air of a day at the beach or a garden walk.
