When you buy storage furniture, there are usually several ways to customize your new furniture. For the storage bench in the picture, I changed the cabinet pulls, the pillow on the seat, and the pillow cover. These modifications shifted the aesthetic of the bench from outdoors to indoors.
Customizing new furniture allows it to meld with the ambience of your home. With this bench, the updated pillow for the seat also made the bench more comfortable to sit on.
Replacing cabinet pulls
Some cabinet pulls are easier to replace than others. These cabinet pulls are secured to the doors of the storage bench with bolts that make them easy to replace.

I bought another set of cabinet pulls that could be attached with the same bolts. Then, I removed the bolts from the original, dark metal cabinet pulls and reinstalled the bolts with the new rattan cabinet pulls. The rattan on the new cabinet pulls has a softer aesthetic that blends with the sunny ambience of my interiors.
Upgrading the seat on a bench
Choosing a new pillow for the bench, required a little custom work. First, I measured the seat to determine what size pillow would fit there and purchased a new pillow. Second, to cover the new pillow and create the comfort of an overstuffed seat, I had a pillow cover made that was 1-to-2 inches smaller than the new pillow.

The new pillow cover has a soft, white glow thanks to the natural texture of the linen it is made from. The fabric captures and reflects sunlight to brighten the room and makes the bench look inviting to sit on.

When shopping for furniture, it’s helpful to remember that you can always customize or personalize your decor.
